Headshot Styling Tips

Wardrobe Styling and Outfits

THE NUMBER ONE WARDROBE RULE IS… Wear something you love! Do NOT bring outfits that you don’t love

What should I wear for my headshot session?

  • Solid Colors  Solids look great, avoid patterns and neon colors.
  • Tailored Clothing Wear nicely fitted clothes, this can be form fitting or one size larger. Avoid anything too oversized.
  • Open Necklines– Moderately open necklines are great for drawing the eye towards the face. A moderate v-neck or blazer looks great, avoid turtlenecks or scarves.
  • Clean Glasses– Glasses are ok to wear! Give your glasses a cleaning the morning of your shoot.
  • Long Sleeves These can be flattering. Again long sleeves work to draw the eye to your face.
  • Appropriate Undergarments– Keep bra straps or undershirts from showing through the exterior of your clothing. Avoid wearing clothing that is too transparent.
  • Jewelry– Keep jewelry tasteful and minimal.
  • Press Your Garments– Make sure clothing is pressed and wrinkle free.
  • Dress to Impress- Dress like you’re trying to impress your ideal client.

Hair

How Should I Style My Hair?

  • Smooth and Chic -Watch for flyaways. A sleek hairstyle photographs well. If your hair is naturally curly/textured use products to give the hair additional moisture.
  • Hair Down-  Wearing your hair down instead of up photographs best.
  • Blowouts Great option to get your hair smooth and give it additional volume.
  • Clean Hair Clear hair always looks best!

Makeup

Start with Skin– Moisturize your skin. If using foundation, wear natural coverage along the lines of what you would wear to a luncheon. Don’t overdo powder, some natural shine is okay while too much powder can’t be retouched.

Neutral Eyes/Lip- Avoid bold colors and using too much shimmer.

Men’s Facial Hair– Wear your facial hair as you normally would. Keep neat and tidy.

Skin and Beauty

Get Your Beauty Sleep- Seriously!  Photoshop can’t fix tired.

Moisturize- Moisturize face, hands, lips. A little scrub over your lips with a toothbrush is a great trick!
